In 2019, when Jess and I founded Community Connections LLC, our mission was clear: to foster connection. Whether it was linking archaeologists within our industry, bridging communities to archaeology, or creating an atmosphere of inclusivity where everyone could share their history, our goal remained the same. History, with its intricate layers, serves as a lens to understand change over time. To explore history is to embrace diverse perspectives and acknowledge the existence of conflicting narratives.
Recognizing a void in the local metro Denver area for a space that encouraged connection and diversity among archaeologists and history enthusiasts, we set out to create something meaningful. Beyond the annual Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists Conference, which brings professionals together, there lacked a regular platform for interaction. Our own passion for engaging conversations about history and archaeology drove us to establish Archaeology Meet-ups—a welcoming space for both professionals and community members.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented hurdles in organizing physical gatherings. However, by October 2022, we navigated through these challenges and began hosting Archaeology Meet-ups during the off-season months—later fall through winter. These gatherings, free from any formal agenda, serve as safe spaces for professionals, enthusiasts, and community members alike, fostering organic connections and relationships.
Over the past couple of years, our community has flourished, attracting students, professionals, and enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. Our gatherings embody the belief that, amidst our differences, we share a common humanity. By navigating through conflicting realities together, we cultivate understanding and empathy.
